PORTLAND, MAINE LABOR LAW ATTORNEY PETER BENNETT TO ADDRESS 12TH
ANNUAL NEW ENGLAND PAYROLL CONFERENCE IN SOUTH PORTLAND, MAINE.
SOUTH PORTLAND, MAINE -- PETER BENNETT, a Portland, Maine management
labor law and employment attorney, will be speaking at the 12th
Annual New England Payroll Conference to be held at the Sheraton
Conference Center in South Portland from June 9 - 11, 2004. Bennett
will be providing to an overview of laws governing employee leaves
of absence payroll professionals from throughout New England. This
area of employment law is considered a hot topic because of the
rapid increases in lawsuits over the issue.
Attorney Bennett’s remarks will cover various Federal and New England
state laws governing employee absences. He will discuss the methods
employers can use to determine whether such laws apply and, if so,
to what extent they apply as well. Bennett also will discuss the
interplay between the employer’s obligation to recognize that an
employee’s request for time off implicates a leave law and the statutory
limitations on an employer’s right to inquire about an employee’s
medical condition, as well as the traditional considerations arising
from workers’ compensation and disability insurance claims.
Bennett is President of The Bennett Law Firm, a Portland, Maine
firm which specializes in representing management throughout the
Northeast on matters of labor and employment law. He has written
and lectured extensively on employment law issues throughout the
United States. He is also Secretary of the American Bar Association’s
Trial and Insurance Practice Section and is a Vice President and
Director of the International Society of Primerus Law Firms. For
