Peter Bennett has been reappointed by incoming American Bar Association (ABA) President Michelle Behnke to serve as Special Advisor to the ABA’s Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary.
For over 65 years, the ABA’s independent Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary has evaluated the professional qualifications of Presidential nominees to the United States federal courts by conducting extensive peer reviews of each nominee’s integrity, professional competence, and judicial temperament. The Standing Committee focuses solely on a nominee’s professional qualifications. Evaluators do not consider a nominee’s philosophy, political affiliation, or ideology.
The Committee’s objective is to provide impartial peer-review evaluations of prospective Article III judicial nominees to assist the White House in assessing whether such individuals should be nominated to the federal judiciary. The Committee submits its final rating to the White House, the Senate Judiciary Committee, and the U.S. Department of Justice to assist in the confirmation process. The Committee’s historic role in the evaluation process helps ensure that the most qualified persons serve on the federal judiciary.
The Committee consists of twenty members. Appointment to the Committee is based on a lawyer’s professional stature and integrity and represent a cross section of leaders in the profession. Since 2016, Bennett has served on the Standing Committee for seven years, nearly an ABA record for service.
Bennett is managing partner of The Bennett Law Firm in Portland, ME and is nationally recognized as a leader in labor and employment law, where he specializes in representing management in collective bargaining negotiations and related traditional labor law matters and employment litigation. He represents clients in state and federal courts as well as before various administrative bodies, and in arbitration.
In addition to serving on the Standing Committee, Attorney Bennett serves as Maine State Delegate to the ABA House of Delegates and Chair of the ABA Committee on Issues of Concern to the Legal Profession. He is a past Chair of the Board of Trustees of the National Judicial College in Reno, NV, a past Chair of the 35,000 member ABA Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section, a past Chair of the ABA Standing Committee on Judicial Independence and a past President of the Boston University School of Law Alumni Association.
